CLINICAL COUNSELOR/SOCIAL WORKER
JOB DESCRIPTION
NATURE OF WORK/SUMMARY:
Provides a range of psychological assessment, diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or case management services for individuals and/or groups, as appropriate to the specific expectations of the position. Works under the direct guidance of the Program Manager. May provide practical training and guidance to professional program staff, as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects data about clients through interview, case history, psychological tests, and/or observational techniques; evaluates data to identify causes of problems and to determine proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists.
- Consults with other legal and treatment agencies and individuals in relation to patient/client records, rights, and responsibilities.
- Consults with other therapists and related professional program staff, as appropriate, in the performance of therapeutic and/or casework; refers clients to appropriate service agencies as required.
- Follows up to determine reliability and validity of treatment used; makes recommendations regarding modification to services and service delivery.
- Participates in, leads, and/or coordinates training sessions and workshops for program staff to enhance needs assessment skills.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Provides and/or arranges for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for clients in a crisis condition and for those with serious disturbance problems.
- Provides casework management of QCUL clients, and performs case assessments.
- Provides counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy to clients; prepares treatment plans and follow-up care programs; provides therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as required.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related Field; at least 6 months of directly related experience, which may include internship and/or practicum.
IL licensure as LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level, OR licensed out of state and eligible for licensure.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical social work and mental health counseling principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
- Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring, and interpretation.
- Interviewing and psychological/developmental evaluation skills.
- Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of case management.
- Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
- Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic programs and to make individual modifications.
- Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
- Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to clients' rights.
- Knowledge of community mental health resources.
- Knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, programs and methodology.
- Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
REPORTING
Reports directly to Program Manager and works closely with program staff. Must adhere to the rules and regulations of the Quad County Urban League and must uphold the mission and vision of the agency.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Position requires: a) provision of direct therapeutic mental health services and treatment planning as part of a therapeutic services team of professional and/or paraprofessional staff b) crisis intervention and provision of emergency services; b) patient psychosocial evaluation and testing; c) determination of appropriate therapeutic approaches or referral of clients in consultation with other professionals; d) participation in the delivery of professional training sessions and workshops.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited physical effort required.
