The National Urban League's Plan for Jobs

The National Urban League's Plan for Jobs

For too long urban communities have been suffering due to unemployment, underemployment and low wages.  The massive job losses triggered by our current economic crisis have brought public attention to this issue. The National Urban League is asking for your support to stem this tide of misery.

In truth, urban communities have been in a recession before there were even talks of a recession.  While the unemployment rate for America is now at 10 percent, it has been in the double digits for African Americans since August 2008 and for Latinos since February 2009.

As one urban community after another falls prey to economic plight, Urban League's across the country experience tremendous demand for more workforce development, more business development and more housing counseling services.  The National Urban League has stepped up to the plate by sending to the Obama Administration a six-point plan of action for putting Americans back to work.  The plan calls for:

•    The funding of direct job creation;
•    The expansion and acceleration of the Small Business Administration's Community Express Loan Program;
•    The creation of Green Empowerment Zones;
•    The Expansion of housing counseling programs nationwide;
•    The expansion of the Youth Summer Jobs Program for 2010;
•    The creation of 100 urban jobs academies to supplement and expand of the Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP)

Earlier this week, President and CEO of the National Urban League, Marc H. Morial, addressed more than 150 Members of the Democratic Caucus at their exclusive weekly luncheon in the Capitol discussing the National Urban League's Plan for Putting Americans Back to Work.  Among other things, he recommended funding for Direct Job Creation, Expansion of the SBA's Community Express Loan Program and support for proven training programs such as our Urban Youth Empowerment Program.

Marc Morial's comments were extremely well received but we cannot do it alone.  The Urban League needs your support to help us help put Americans back to work and save our communities.  A gift of as little as $10 dollars, helps an Affiliate keep the doors open a little longer to aid families in need.  Would you make a gift today?   If you cannot make a financial gift, please call your Congress member. My friends, it's about jobs.  It's always been about jobs!
